So many photographers will make the claim that they specialize in Fine Art, Food, Weddings, Portraits, Interiors and so on, when the real truth is they are not. Just like a painter that works in water colors is not an expert in oils, or mixed media. You know the saying “jack of all trades, master of none” What happens is many photographers cast their nets wide and far to get as many clients in the door as possible. I do not do that. I am a portrait photographer by specialty, thats what I do. My name is Franco Vogt and I am a Hudson Valley Portrait Photographer. Can I shoot other stuff, sure, am I pretty good at other stuff, yea I am. But if you ask me what I do, I respond with the singular answer, I am a Portrait Photographer. I have spent over 20 years honing my skills in this genre. I shoot both in the studio and on location with equal ease. My skills have been sharpened by my many years of traveling the world photographing specifically people. I have shot portraits for advertising agencies, in Pharmaceutical ads, in national campaigns for Verizon, American Express. There are no situations that I have not seen before and I use this breadth of experience to your advantage. Portraiture is a unique field in that it requires not only technical skills but the ability to understand your subjects fears and insecurities. Most of my work really is making the sitter feel comfortable enough to let go for a few minutes and give me an expression that feels true and unguarded. A therapist with a camera..
My favorite portraits are the ones that feel completely free of pretense or artificial context. Almost as if a camera were to show and snap some quick shots without the subject knowing that the session were taking place. This happens through the lighting the set and the body language. Unless a situation is calling for a particular type of light I would rather have my lighting look like it was part of the existing light in the room, augmenting the ambient light that is already doing the bulk of the work. This leads to more natural images and more relaxed subjects. So if you are in the Hudson Valley and the surrounding areas and need a portrait for you web site, book, advertising needs don’t hesitate to call.
